While we agree with you in principle, we were scratching our heads when reading the zoo’s expansion plans.
An example: how does a climbing wall further their mission?

Los Angeles Zoo Mission: Through the passion of our team, the Los Angeles Zoo is leading the way in saving wildlife and connecting Angelenos to the natural world by providing exemplary animal care, delivering distinctive and diverse learning opportunities, and creating unforgettable experiences.

I have no problem with upgrades and making it more theme park like in some respects. It is long overdue.

When Walt Disney (remember him) was looking for a location, he originally looked at Griffith Park, then looked north at Burbank before finally looking down to Orange County.
Perhaps looking north, like you suggested, isn’t such a bad idea since visitors could do a two-fer… Magic Mountain… and the LA Zoo. Would you like to propose this to City Council?

I agree. The park is not managed as Griffith would like. For instance, there should be no golf courses at all. They consume enormous amounts of water just to entertain a few select golfers that should be at a driving range instead.
Think about how much the non-golfers subsidize the golfers!
Plus, the private courses get tax breaks or no one could afford to play golf in a city. Why not close ALL golf courses?

LA should consider moving the zoo to the north county area, near Magic Mountain would be best, and build a modern zoo that does not force the animals suffering captivity to live in such small spaces. The current space is an abomination. Adding a few acres won’t help.

We would agree that the budget for maintenance in this Park should be increased.
We would also acknowledge that, yes… roads are closed, not because of staffing, but because of abuse. In that respect more interior roads should be closed.

The current facility has my utmost respect. This 23 acre Griffith Park area, on the other hand, is ridiculously remote, even for park enthusiasts. The zoo is not going to pave these acres, they are going to bring them to life! Angelinos need outdoor activity space that lives up to its potential and is handled by proven environmental stewards. Lastly, if we have a first-rate multi-faceted L.A. Zoo the city will be proud of it. And yes, it will attract visitors – good family folk – that will help make possible more paychecks for our community. And while we’re at it, the budget for maintaining Griffith Park should be increased. There are roads in it that are closed for lack of staffing. Thank you.

Thanks for your response to our article about the Zoo expansion

And in response to your point about hundreds of dollars spent to expand the zoo’s features that don’t contribute to youth education or public health…

We’ve heard this might become a bond issue in order to fund some of the items on the zoo’s “wish list.” So this could get very interesting.

The hours… currently (according to your point) the hours are 10-5 so animals can rest at night. However, the zoo expansion would include venues with expanded hours so the venue could host more “fundraising” events ‘
