The beacon is in fact… gone!

Thanks for letting us know about the information you used (GP Detention Center), and good luck with publication of your novel!

Good Day,
I’m writing to let you know that I researched some of your articles, especially “The Infamous Detention Facility in Griffith Park,” which is included in the bibliography of my fifth novel, AFTER THE WASPS, to be published late fall/early winter ’23. The novel, set in 1946 and 1977 Los Angeles, is literary/historical fiction, and two chapters take place mostly during two night-hikes into the chaparral of Griffith Park. I incorporated some of your information, but no quotations. GP is also part of the setting in LOS ANGELES,1968, HAPPY RANCH TO WATTS, my third novel.

I grew up (Glenfeliz Blvd.) very close to what was “my” park in the late ’40s and the ’50s, and I graduated from Marshall, etc., etc. Publishers are delighted when excerpts are used prior to publication for “free” advertising. We could do that if you’re interested, at no cost to you unless you also print the excerpt. I would be glad to e-mail the material for your review.

Finally, I ended up reading most of your articles and am fascinated by some of the changes. Besides roaming and playing in GP as a kid, later I was a “reaction assistant” for the Parks Department at Crystal Springs, the “old” Travel Town, and the playground hut near the pool and tennis courts. I am very impressed by the notoriety you provide for many organizations whose
missions are to preserve and/or protect Griffith Park in various ways.
Remember The Beacon! (Assuming that it’s gone.)
Terry W.

We completely agree, and the more we learn about some of the more shameful aspects of our shared history, we realize how important it is to share and challenge that knowledge. Otherwise, history blithely moves along… unconfronted.

I agree with you Darrell. It’s great you had the opportunity to meet Dr. Hoshizaki and have a friendship with him. I went to Belmont and Virgil and although I was aware of the events following Pearl Harbor, I never knew this about Griffith Park and other locations. Thanks for posting your comments and letting us know Dr. Hoshizaki is still active in the Heart Mountain Foundation Board.

This article is substantive and well-researched. And the photo helps us emotionally connect with this shameful episode in American history.

I am Darrell’s sister and grew up with Cheryl Burch McDonald and her siblings Karen and Clinton who are the grandchildren of the Marshalls who cared for the Hoshizaki home during their absence. Cheryl and I continue to be great friends along with Eileen Emi Tabuchi, daughter of another Heart Mountain incarceree, Frank Emi. He was one of the leaders of the Fair Play Committee in camp. My life has been richer having been from that neighborhood where we played, studied, ate, and worshipped together.

Thanks Darrell for the comment and your ongoing friendship with Takashi. And yes… sadly far too few know about this part of American history.

Few know what happened when Pearl Harbor was attacked; fewer still know of this detention facility (like Tuna Canyon in the foothills). Dr. Hoshizaki is a friend of mine, we serve together on the Heart Mountain Foundation Board. And our families grew up together in the folksy neighborhood along Virgil called J Flats. Takashi is a wonderful man, a patriot, a draft resister and yet a US Army veteran. Find another one of those.

Thank you for the history.
