For over a century, Griffith Park has been L.A.'s great urban wilderness where we come to connect with our natural heritage and history. Friends of Griffith Park is a non-profit charitable group that promotes the enlightened stewardship of Griffith Park so it can survive and thrive for another hundred years. As a 501(c)(3) organization, memberships and donations are deductible to the full extent of the law.
2011 Highlights
Active and energetic advocacy for the Park: We attended numerous city meetings, commenting and advising on policy, environmental, and recreational matters. We lobbied to increase park funding and opposed commercial advertising in city parks
Financial support for initiatives unique to Griffith Park: We facilitated the receipt of grants from the Natural Trust for Historic Preservation and the Griffith J. Griffith Charitable Trust which will allow us to create a blueprint for the revitalization of the historic Fern Dell area of Griffith Park. We also won a trail assistance grant from National Park Service.
Education for better understanding: Friends of Griffith Park, in conjunction with the Sierra Club, conducted 8 hikes in the Park for inter-city children, exposing over 300 kids to the wonders of nature. We sponsored Lecture Series to impart knowledge to the public.
Service in improve the park environment: Our group of volunteers has scheduled Park clean ups, which involved trash pick-up, graffiti paint-outs, and invasive plant removal projects.
There is still much work to be done! With your continued support we hope to enhance all of our current projects, and also embark on new work to conserve and preserve Griffith Park.
